Dr. Julius Gy. Fábos (Professor Emeritus, University of Massachusetts-Amherst)

Title: Introduction to conference, History of greenway and landscape planning, and discussion on the Hungarian and American connections.

Julius Gy. Fábos is emeritus professor of Landscape Planning and recipient of an Honorary Degree from the University of Horticulture, Budapest, Hungary. BS in plant sciences, Rutgers, 1961; MLA, Harvard, 1964; Ph.D. in Landscape Planning and Conservation, Michigan, 1973; Fellow, ASLA, 1985; ASLA Medallist, 1997. Principal developer of the METLAND System for landscape assessment and planning; has been awarded numerous research grants. Author and editor of more than 200 articles and research bulletins, as well as five books, the latest of which are: Land Use Planning, published by Chapman and Hall, 1985 and co-editor of the book entitled, Greenways: The Beginning of an International Movement, published by Elsevier, 1996.

Dr. M. Teresa L. Andresen (Professor, University of Porto, Portugal)

Title: Ecological networks: from regional to metropolitan strategies. The Northern Region of Portugal and the Porto Metropolitan Area.

Professor M. Teresa L. Andresen received Degree in Landscape Architecture and in Agronomy from the Lisbon Technical University in 1982, Master of Landscape Architecture at University of Massachusetts in 1984 and Ph.D. in Sciences Applied to the Environment at University of Aveiro, Portugal in 1992. In period 1996-98 she was the president of Institute of Nature Conservation of Portugal. President of European Foundation for Landscape Architecture and vice-president of International Federation of Landscape Architects in 2007. The coordinator of the project: Porto Metropolitan Area - “A park network for Porto Metropolitan Region” – 2007-2009. Currently she is professor of Landscape Architecture at the School of Sciences at Porto University and director of Porto Botanical Garden.

Dr. Attila Csemez (Dean, Professor, Corvinus University of Budapest, Hungary)

Title: Fábos Medal lecture on the Conference Dinner: The hidden potential of dams and abandoned railway lines in hungarian greenway development.

Dr. Attila Csemez is Professor of Landscape Architecture. He received degree at University of Horticulture and Food Industry in 1968 and received Postgraduate diplom at Technical University of Budapest 1976. He was researcher and planner at Dresden University of Technology in period 1975-78. He is the member of HUNGIS- Hungarian Geographical System Foundation, IFLA, Chamber of Hungarian Architects, Central-Hungarian Planning Comittee, and Guckler Karoly Natrure Conservation Association. In 2003 he became the Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences with the dissertation title: Landscape scenery potential and landscape characteristics determination. He is Professor of the Landscape Planning and Regional Development Department since 1995 and the Dean of the Landscape Architecture Faculty, Corvinus University of Budapest since 2006.

Dr. Jack Ahern (Professor, University of Massachusetts-Amherst)

Title: Landscape planning for ecological networks, green infrastructure as a planning approach from case studies around the world.

Professor Jack Ahern is an internationally known landscape architect and Fulbright Award recipient. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. His specialties include applied urban and landscape ecology, ecological management of plant communities, and theories for sustainability in landscape planning and design. Professor Ahern received his Ph.D. in environmental sciences from Wageningen Agricultural University in the Netherlands, promoted by Klaas Kerkstra. Earlier, he had earned a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Pennsylvania - under Ian McHarg, and a bachelor of science in environmental design from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst – as a student of Julius Fabos.
